Map settings screen
The map settings screen allows you to adjust map specific settings.
The map settings screen shows the following options:
- map provider and type
- map tracking mode
- grid lines/labels
Map provider and type
MilGPS offers the full range of Apple maps and Google maps. There may be slight differences in map annotation look and feel when using different mapping providers as different map view software is used for each provider.
- Standard. The standard map is a road atlas style map that shows roads/streets and other key features, on a blank background.
- Satellite. The satellite map shows satellite imagery.
- Hybrid. The hybrid map shows satellite imagery overlaid with roads.
- Terrain. (Google only) A topographic style map with hill shading and contour lines.
- Blank. (Apple only) The blank map is plain grey. Use this map if you do not have a data connection to avoid the distracting default tiles from loading.
Note: all maps except the blank map require a data connection. While the Apple/Google maps frameworks do cache some map data, you should not rely on this caching to provide you with offline maps. True, persistent offline maps are not possible with Apple/Google maps as it is against their terms of service.
Map tracking
The following tracking options are available:
- No tracking. The map will only move when you pan or zoom it.
- Location tracking. The crosshairs will lock to your current location and the map will move as you move.
- Location and heading tracking. The crosshairs will lock to your current location and the map will move as you move, and rotate based on your device’s current heading.
Grid lines/labels
The following grid line/label options are available:
- None. No grid lines are shown.
- Grid lines. Grid lines are shown. This includes grid lines for grid zones, 100km squares, 10km, 1km and 100m grid lines. The grid should be exactly consistent with the location given by the crosshairs, and is correct worldwide (including modified zones near Norway and Svalbard). The grid will not display in polar regions covered by the Universal Polar Stereographic (UPS) projection.
- Grid lines and labels. As above for grid lines, but grid zone, 100km square (MGRS only) and easting and northing labels are shown.
It is normal for the grid to be curved when zoomed out (due to the curvature of the earth) and on an angle when zoomed in (this. It is also normal for the grid to look different where grid zones intersect. The angle of the grid when zoomed in is the difference between grid north and true north. Most paper topographic maps are printed so that the grid runs exactly up and down - the grid north angle if any will be noted in the marginal information.
Grid labels are difficult to read/use when the map is rotated, and it is recommended that you don’t rotate the map when grid labels are enabled.
