Navigate Screen
The navigate screen is designed to give you the information you need to navigate to a waypoint.
By default, the navigate screen shows:
- The name of your destination waypoint, or “No Destination” if you have not selected a destination.
- A compass dial which rotates so that north on the dial is in the direction of your chosen north reference.
- An arrow superimposed on the compass dial which indicates the direction of your waypoint.
- The bearing/azimuth to your destination (given with respect to your current north reference). For navigation over long distances where start and finish bearings/azimuths may be different due to the curvature of the earth, this field shows the bearing/azimuth at your current location (start bearing/azimuth).
- The distance to your destination (straight line distance)
The action button in the top right corner reveals a menu with the following options:
- Choose destination waypoint. This option will take you to the waypoints screen to choose a waypoint to navigate to.
- Show destination detail. This option will show you more detail about your waypoint.
- Quick goto. This option will pull up a screen where you can enter in a grid reference and navigate to it immediately, meaning you don’t need to enter in your destination as a waypoint first.
Heading vs course:
- When you are moving at low speed, the internal digital compass is used to orient the compass dial and destination arrow. Because a heading estimate is being used, you can rotate the device in different directions while stationary and the compass/arrow will update. This is done so that you can figure out which direction to start out in when navigating.
- When your speed increases, the compass dial and arrow will be oriented by your course, which is taken from successive GPS measurements. The compass dial and arrow will respond to changes in the direction you are moving, and not changes in device orientation.
- The method currently being used to source heading/course information is displayed below the compass dial.
